A bloodline of violence. Iryna Zarutska’s killer, Decarlos Brown, didn’t break the family pattern of violence. His brother is already behind bars for stabbing a 65-year-old man to death in Charlotte in 2012, and their father served years for violent crimes, including felony conspiracy, breaking and entering, and weapons offenses. Even his own family saw the danger. His mother begged the court to keep him locked up, and his brother says the killing “could have been prevented.” The warnings were everywhere. The system ignored them and an innocent woman paid the price.
